History of Velvet Antler

First stated as the "Pearl in the brow of the deer" by T'sao Kany Mu, an early Chinese medical compendium. The first written record was shown in the book called Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, from the Hun dynasty, 206 B.C. to 220 A.D. It's use goes back more than 10,000 years in the Orient. Chinese and Korean uses of velvet antler for the specified health reasons are 2000 years old. It's use in European and English medications dates back well before the 1700's. Mexico's Cora Indian tribes of Northern Mexico ate scrapings as late as the 1920's. The harvesting and use of velvet antler from various members of the deer family date back at least 2,000 years and ever since then velvet antler has been a valuable folk medicine used by the people of  Tibet, China and Korea. Velvet antler is a highly prized medicinal drug in these cultures. Also, uses are noted in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Today, major producers are the major users of the product such as China, Russia, Mongolia, Korea, and Munchuria. Antler is also a renewable resource. The antlers grow new each year of the elks life which can be 20 to 30 years.

Historical Uses

Antler is said to build up the body's natural resources against disease or a chronic condition. It is considered a great energy product. According to reports from Russia, New Zealand, and the Orient, antler generates hemoglobin, controls blood pressure, increases lung efficiency, improves muscle tone and glandular functions, sharpens the wits, heals stomach ulcers, relieves the inflammation of arthritis and eases the debilities of old age.

An early Chinese herbal written around A.D. 200 describes the uses of growing antlers, "Deer Velvet tastes sweet and it's property is warm". Pilose antler (velvet antler) used in the cardiovascular system works on hypertension.

The Yin and Yang concept of medicine deals with balances. Velvet antler is considered a good way of bringing the body back into balance and to keep it there. The Chinese use velvet antler as a tonic to maintain good health, cure sickness and to strengthen a weakened body. Velvet antler is consumed for various purposes that include: to increase blood in the body; to reduce kidney deficiency (insufficient secretion of sexual hormones); to remedy cardiovascular disorders (anemia, low blood pressure or hypotomia); to promote rapid healing; for recuperation and regeneration of damaged tissue; to remedy sexual disorders in men (impotency, watery semen, premature ejaculation, hypertrophy of prostate gland); to treat menstrual disorders and menopause in women; and for treatment for cold extremities, lumbago, clear and profuse urine, weight loss, slow growth in children, weak bone and sinews, cold hands and feet, to bear colder weather, dysmenorrhoea, and leukonhonea.

The Koreans have compared it with our vitamins and health foods. One dose does not lift an invalid from the sick bed overnight, or jolt the impotent into mythic sexual prowess. The average Korean family buys about 30 grams of dried velvet a month.

Velvet antler has been used in Russia since the fifteenth century. Organized farming for antlers, however, did not begin until about 1840 in Russia. Pantocrin, a lipid extract of velvet antler was introduced in 1931 and has a long history of being used by Russian athletes. Both research and clinical studies from Russia show beneficial results for athletes. Dr. Arkady Koulton, M.D.,Ph.D. and past chairman of the Medical Committee of the Russian Body Building Federation has conducted controlled studies on Olympic athletes in the Soviet Union. Results have shown that athletes taking pantocrin had significant endurance increases.

Today several world class athletes are benefiting from the use of velvet antler. The Olympic Committee of Russia has approved a velvet antler formula for training Russian sportsmen for Olympic Games 2000 in Sidney.

Composition of Velvet Antler

After reviewing scientific research conducted on velvet antler Dr. Betty Kamen, Ph.D has written a book called The Remarkable Healing Power of Velvet
Chapter five identifies components in velvet antler:
  • Amino acids - Including essential amino acids.
  • Linolenic acid - The most significant of our essential fatty acids.
  • Phospholipids - The major structural lipids (fats) of most of out cellular membranes.
  • Minerals - Calcium, Phosphorus, magnesium, iron and potassium.
  • Collagen - Protein substance of the fibers of skin, tendon, bone, cartilage, and all other connective tissue; particularly collagen type II
  • Proteoglycans - Important for elasticity of joints, basic structural building block of joint cartilage.
  • Glucosamine sulfate - Component of chondroitin sulfate; necessary for connective tissue.
  • Prostaglandins - Naturally occurring anti-inflammatory agents.

Research and Scientific Studies

 Worldwide, over 250 articles, summaries and reviews have been published on the studies and research on velvet antler. Research has been conducted in Russia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and Canada.

Since 1991, New Zealand scientists have researched the composition and medical properties of velvet at the AgReasearch Inermay. Leader of the New Zealand research team, and world wide expert on deer velvet research, Dr. Jimmy Suttie, has announced that evidence of the medical benefits of velvet antler is growing. Trials have shown that treating human white blood cells with extracts of velvet antler stimulated the immune systems, as measured by increased production of white blood cells. Other studies by Suttie have demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory and growth stimulating properties.

The institute of Biologically Active Substances in Viadivostock in Russsia has turned out medical studies produced by Professor Israel I. Brekhman and his colleagues. Brekman's tests for the pharmacological activity of velvet were adopted as a standard quality test for velvet antler in 1962.

In China, several articles have been written in Chinese on the research carried out by a team of experts lead by B.X. Wang. A 1985 report states that the polysaccharides in velvet antler may play a role in observed anti-ulcer effect.

Leading the way in North America with research is the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Dr. Jeong S. Sim, Ph.D., professor at the University chaired the first international symposium on Antler Science and Product Technology on April 9-12, 2000 at Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. Leading antler researchers from around the world will meet to lay a solid  scientific foundation for the antler industry.

As research continues on velvet antler it will further demonstrate and validate the traditionally uses from cultures around the world for the past 2000 years.

Statement of Nutritional Support

 Regulations provided in the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) allow for use of certain statements called "statements of nutritional support." The use of nutritional support statements must be substantiated by sufficient scientific research. Nutrinfo Corporation, a well-established regulatory affairs consulting firm in the dietary supplement business has reviewed the scientific research on velvet antler and concluded that there is substantiation to allow for the following nutritional support statement: "nutritional support for joint structure and function"
The key ingredients in velvet antler associated with the support for joints are collagen Type II and chondroitin sulfate.

Many studies have shown most of the carbohydrate in antler is proteoglycan, which is a combination of protein and carbohydrate. The carbohydrate protein is primarily glycosaminoglycan, of which chondroitinn sulphate is by far the predominant constituent.

Collagen is a protein, an important part of connective tissue, and is the most common protein in the body. a report published by Nutrinfo, indicated there is a significant body of scientific research which shows that orally administered collagen may help relieve some symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis for some people.

Consists of 100% elk velvet antler harvested at the "velvet stage." Velvet is the name given to antlers while they are growing and still in a cartilaginous state. During this stage the antler is rich with nutrients. On our farms in Wisconsin, we raise high genetic bulls, who have a record of producing premium quality antlers. The elk are pastured on alfalfa fields and supplemented with a mixture of grains and minerals with no artificial additives.

  • The antlers are harvested annually, under tight guidelines outlined by the North American Elk Breeders Association, using no drugs, and causing no harm or stress to the elk.
  • The complete antler is dried and processed in an antler drying facility, one designed after the original Korean methods of drying.
  • The ground antler is then micro biologically tested (bacterial analysis-standard plate count).
  • Encapsulation is done in a FDA inspected lab that operates according to strict Good Manufacturing Procedures (GMP).

MANUFACTURING AND QUALITY STANDARDS

  • MCEF adheres to the NAEBA code of ethics and complies with the Elk Farming Handbook for all matters of animal care, health and management.
  • MCEF follows the industry-approved method of velveting using harvesting guidelines established by The North American Elk Breeders Association , which they state in the "The Velvet Management Handbook."
  • MCEF harvests velvet using "Velvet Harvesting Guidelines" chart published by NAEBA, to insure proper length and outgrowth to achieve maximum nutritional value.

  • Only premium antlers are used.

Velvet Processing - All processing is done at a government inspected antler drying facility per Federal or State regulations

  •  For product quality, all drying procedures are approved by MCEF.
  • Grinding and pulverizing antler is done to meet requirements established by the FDA encapsulating lab.
  •  Every batch of ground antlers used is 100 % velvet antler with no additives, using the entire antler, including tip and base.
  •  A microbiological analysis is done for each batch of processed ground antlers at a pharmaceutical testing laboratory to ensure product safety. The test includes the following: an aerobic plate count, salmonella, coliform, E. Coli, Staphylococci, yeast and molds.
  •  Each batch of antlers must meet the microbiological specifications established for FDA approved Laboratories.
  •  Analytical results are kept on file at MCEF.
  •  A copy of the Laboratory Report is available upon request to all buyers.
